Welcome to the Embassy of Zambia

The Embassy of Zambia in Brussels is accredited to three European countries, that is Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg, and international organizations i.e. the European Union (EU), African Caribean and the Pacific (ACP) Group of countries, and the Organizations for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Netherlands.

Though international courts in The Netherlands i.e. International Courts of Justice (ICJ), International Criminal Court (ICC), International Criminal Tribunal Court for the former Yougoslavia (ICTY), the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) and World Customs Organization (WCO) fall under the Zambian Mission in New York, the Zambian Mission in Brussels does cooperate on behalf of the New York Mission due to proximity.

EU impressed with Zambia’s political climate, says Ambassador Inonge

ZAMBIAN Ambassador to Belgium Dr Inonge Mbikusita Lewanika has said the PF administration under President Michael Sata has given the European Union extra enthusiasm. In an interview before the send-off dinner held for her on Wednesday by the Mission in Brussels, Ambassador Mbikusita Lewanika said the future for Zambia was bright and it was up to the country to make good use of the BENELUX [Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg] countries and the European Union to accrue more benefits.

She said the EU was impressed with Zambia’s political climate, especially with the peaceful transition of power during last year’s elections. “The election was peaceful and we got a lot of invitations for them to visit Zambia, for example the EU [Council] vice-president for external relations Catherine Ashton wanted to meet President Sata at the Commonwealth summit in Australia,” Ambassador Mbikusita Lewanika said. “Fortunately we had some high power delegations here such as the minister of commerce, trade and industry who met with the highest officials in the European Union. We also had the PF delegation led by Mr Wynter Kabimba [party secretary general], who were also warmly received by senior officials in the EU.”

Ambassador Mbikusita Lewanika who also represented Zambia to the Netherlands, Luxemburg, African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group of states, International Criminal Court (ICC), International Court of Justice (ICJ), Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), Organisation of the Prohibition of the Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) said in spite of the challenges the embassy faced, the window opportunity to sell Zambia to the globe as an anchorage destination for investment was wide.

“The economy is growing, and what has impressed the BENELUX and the European Union was the election of the Patriotic Front and President Sata. They were very excited. There is a lot of goodwill towards Zambia; a lot of openings, just good gesture. This is the time actually for us to take advantage of this goodwill, openness and warmth because it may not last forever but this is our chance,” she said. “The new administration (PF government) has added value and has added the enthusiasm and excitement about Zambia.”
