Zambian envoy bids farewell to ACP's Dr. Chambas |
|
Zambia's Ambassador to the EU, ACP and Benelux countries, Dr. Inonge Mbikusita-Lewanika yesterday bid farewell to ACP Secretary-General, Dr. Muhammad Chambas who described her as a role model to the women of Zambia and that her country's girl-child needed to hear her story. Dr. Mbikusita-Lewanika whose tour of duty has come to an end was described by the ACP Chief as one who was a real pleasure to work with as she brought her wisdom and experience to the table although her stay in Brussels had been short.
"You will be missed," quipped Dr. Chambas who was however elated that Zambia would host the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly(JPA) in Lusaka next month. In reply, Dr. Mbikusita-Lewanika said her stay in the European capital had made her gain layers of experience and expertise in areas previously uncharted for her. During her brief tour of duty in Brussels, she has chaired ACP Committees on Least Developed Countries(LDCs), the Brussels' chapter of the International Conference of Great Lakes Region(ICGLR) as well as the Trade and Commodities committee. All in all, the Zambian envoy has had 20 years of public service, 11 as a parliamentarian in Zambia and nine as diplomat the bulk of which were in Washington before her transfer to Brussels, less than two years ago. |

Huge crowds attend President Sata's inauguration |
PATRIOTIC Front (PF) leader Michael Sata was last Friday inaugurated as Zambia’s 5th Republican president at a thunderous ceremony held at the Supreme Court grounds in Lusaka. The celebrations that characterised the victory and subsequent inauguration of Mr Sata and the PF were unprecedented in Zambia’s history. It was the biggest ever inauguration ceremony witnessed in Zambia and would be remembered by many for years to come. The PF members and supporters did not need any transport to get them to the venue for the inauguration ceremony. They walked long kilometres in huge numbers from the different townships of Lusaka. Although the inauguration ceremony was initially scheduled to be held at parliament building at 10:30hrs the sudden change of the venue to the Supreme Court grounds later in the afternoon did not deter any of them from walking to the new venue. These were the supporters and members who spent the night on the streets in jubilation after the declaration of the presidential results about 20 minutes after midnight on Thursday. The hour of the long dream to the presidency for Mr Sata had arrived. It was time to get to new heights in his political career to lead not only a political party but a nation as a whole. |
